Thomas John Mahlum

1945 – January 14, 2020

Thomas John Mahlum, 74, of Jacksonville, North Carolina, passed away on Tuesday morning, January 14th, 2020, at his home.

Tom Mahlum was born on October 11, 1945, in St. Cloud, Minnesota. He attended high school in Pittsburgh where he was a varsity athlete and Student Council President. After the family moved back to MN, Tom graduated from Cretin High School in St. Paul. He was a proud graduate of the University of Minnesota where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree majoring in Political Science.
Tom served proudly as a Captain in the United States Marine Corps from May 1968 to May 1971. He received both a Bronze Star with Valor and two Purple Hearts while serving in Vietnam.
After his discharge from the Marine Corps, he worked for the Minneapolis Housing Authority. Later he moved back to Jacksonville to start his real estate career. Son, Daniel and daughter, Beth were born during those early years.
Tom experienced considerable success as a realtor and shared his wisdom and knowledge with everyone who was willing to learn. He received the Distinguished Real Estate Instructor (DREI) designation for his accomplishments as an instructor reaching students throughout the state and across the country. Innovative, creative, and engaging in his approach, he mentored and guided dozens of new real estate agents who went on to successful careers themselves.
His involvement with his community was extensive including several years as a volunteer firefighter, Kiwanian and eventually the President of the Kiwanis Club where his service became legendary.
Tom married Joy Sermons Shaw, and Joy’s son, John joined the family. Joy and Tom shared twenty-five years together full of adventure, travel, and managing an extensive real estate portfolio.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary; niece, Anne-Elizabeth; and several beloved aunts, uncles and cousins.
He is survived by his wife, Joy; son, Daniel (Nina); daughter, Beth (Joe); step-son, John Shaw of Anchorage, AK; eight grandchildren, Dylan, Jayden, Reagan, Riley, Lielanie, Mason, Cloey, and Phinn; sisters-in-law, Lynn Healy of Dallas, Shelley Basnight of Greenville, Debra Sermons of Greenville, and Pat Zimmerman (Tim) of Raleigh; Uncle Monte (Donna) Mahlum of St. Paul; Aunt Breta Conlon of Chicago; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.


David M. Mordorski

August 4, 1945 – March 15, 2020

David M. Mordorski, 74, of Bonita Springs, passed away on March 15, 2020 in the care of the American House at Coconut Point. He is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Loretta J (Fisch) Mordorski. Father to Sheila Panegasser of FL and Tracy Durham of MS. “Grampa Dave” to Kacie and Kaia. A Celebration of David’s Life will be held at a time to be announced. In Lieu of flowers, David’s family kindly requests donations be made to Alzheimer’s Research. John David Turnbull

April 21, 1945 – December 12, 2020

Mr. John David Turnbull, 75, of Lillington, North Carolina, died Saturday, December 12, 2020 at Central Harnett Hospital in Lillington. Mr. Turnbull was born April 21, 1945 in St. Paul Minnesota to the late John and Corrine Lancett Turnbull.  

Mr. Turnbull was a retired US Air Force Senior Master Seargeant serving for 20 years. After his military service, Mr. Turnbull worked as a satellite engineer with GE, GTE, and finally SES. He loved everything about computers, especially playing computer games and a good round of golf. 

Funeral Mass for Mr. Turnbull will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, December 17, 2020 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Dunn, with Father Maroney officiating.  

Mr. Turnbull is survived by his wife of 55 years, Elizabeth Paulin Turnbull; son, Brian Turnbull and wife Ngocthao; daughters, Stephanie Gray and husband Steve, Lisa Van Patten, and Richelle Nolan and husband Lou; nine grandchildren, and three great grandchildren; three brothers, and four sisters.
