July 2022 Luncheon

Hello All,

Just got back from the regular monthly class of 63 lunch where  a dozen of the class gathered to break bread and socialize.

One of the guys scheduled to be at the lunch was injured playing pickle ball earlier today and had to cancel—we wish Tim Valento a quick recovery.

Dave Britz who is the organizer of our golf outing is away on vacation but wants to be sure all who want to play in the class of 63 golf event (THE CHARLIE) on Wednesday August 10th contact him at 651 459 1858 or britzie37@aol.com

Speaking of golf, you may recall I solicited input from the class on who may have scored a hole in one in their golfing career. I got six replies.

Before I show you the list and some detail, did you know the odds of getting a hole in one for the average golfer is 12,500 to 1. Because we have a classmate who along with holes in one has also achieved a double eagle (albatross) which is far rarer than a hole in one and the odds to make an albatross are estimated to be about 600,000 to 1, that feat is added to the list.

So here is the list of the guys achieving these rare events in golf.

Bob O’Malley (2) one in 2014 at Biltmore Links and one in 2015 at Paradise Valley golf club. Both of these courses are in the Phoenix area where Bob resides. Bob said he saved a lot of money because the club houses were closed when he finished both rounds.

Pat Quinlan (1) Makaha Country club in Hawaii in 1970.

Terry Bacigalupo (1) Myrtle Beach SC in 1986 with a group of 32 guys on a golf vacation. Terry said that he recalls a very high bar bill!

Mike Swenson (1) Maddens Classic in Brainerd in 2015 and Mike has a plaque to prove it.

Richard Bulter-No Details

Don Danneker (2) One at Inver Grove Golf club in the mid 80’s and one at Como golf in St Paul in 2016. Don has the Double Eagle (Albatross) at Hastings Club in 1988. Don says the 2 holes in one cost him a bundle!

Well congrats to those comes from the rest of us who have been trying for many years with no success.

A few other things; you may recall CDH has organized  an annual ALL alumni (Cretin, Derham Hall and CDH) get together. It was suppose to kick off last September but Covid got in the way. So this year it is scheduled for Thursday September 15th at CDH. Here is a link to give you more info https://www.cretin-derhamhall.org/onecdh/

Since all three schools are included in the annual event Mothers, Sons, Daughters Fathers, Brothers, Sisters etc are all invited to have an enjoyable evening together as ONE CDH ALUMNI CELEBRATION.

More info is due out soon.

Mark your calendars

Wednesday August 10th—-golf outing at Highland National

Thursday August 11th—-regular monthly class lunch at Pool and Yacht Club

Thursday September 15th—-Annual CDH ALL ALUMNI gathering at CDH

Thanks and best to all

June 2022 Class Luncheon

Hello Everyone,

15 guys from the class of 63 got together today for lunch. Beautiful day as we watched the mighty Mississippi flow rapidly by.

Lots of chit chatting and reminiscing and someone brought up the fact that next year will be the 60th anniversary of graduating from Cretin.

Start thinking about what we should do to celebrate.

John Runyon has some thoughts that he will put together to share with all of us very soon.

In the nearer future we have next month’s class lunch at the P&Y on July 14th, mark your calendar!

In August we have the 9th annual Class of 63 golf outing at Highland National. This event is known as the CHARLIE in remembrance and honor of our classmate Charlie Schuldt who started the event in 2014 and Charlie passed Sept 3rd 2016.

A separate email will be sent out about the golf gathering in the next week—-look for it and sign up to play.

Best to all,

Tom Troskey

Photos from Class of ’63 Luncheons and Events- the Early Years

Tom Troskey has been taking photos of classmates at our Class of ’63 Luncheons since they began. Many of them pre-date the implementation of our class website. Tom and Dave Britz thought we would appreciate a walk through his archives. Below are photos from various lunches we had at O’Garas as well as an image from one of the “Charlie” Schuldt golf outings….

Classmate Tom Hofer and Military Officers Association of America (MOAA)

Tom Hofer recently reached out to us about posting an item of interest on our website. This certainly qualifies. Here is Tom’s note….

I am the President of the St. Pete Area (FL) Chapter of the Military Officers Assocation of America (MOAA) and I recently had the opportunity to present four $1000 scholarships to St. Pete JROTC graduates in May of this years

In my short speech presenting the award, I noted that as a JROTC cadet, I sat in their place 59 years ago in May 1963 in St. Paul, Minnesota.  I told them that I never dreamed that my journey would include 29 yrs of military service service and an additional 10 yrs with civil service.  I emphasized that this could be their journey as well.   I was very proud to note the seriousness and attention to detail of the cadets.   (Important to note that 3 or the 4 schools that have Army JROTC programs are inner city schools and the majority of the cadets are Black or Latino.

Here is a photo of me in uniform making the presentation to the outstanding military graduate at Hollins HS – JROTC cadet, Ms. Gabriela Potrero-Luna.  She will be studying engineering at the University of South Florida here in Tampa.

Regards.

Birthday Party

On Sunday, May 15,  Joseph M. McGrath celebrated his 75th birthday along with his 77th (his 75th was postponed because of the pandemic).  A good sized crowd showed up at the Lift Bridge Brewery in Stillwater to wish Joe a Happy Birthday!

Several of the Class of ’63 luncheon contingent made an appearance.   And we ran into classmate that most of us had not seen in decades, five in my case.  Michael Schilling was in my homeroom and he is just right of the birthday boy in the photo below.  Others in the photo are Gary Stoffel, Joe Brooks, Tom Troskey, Joe Schufman, and Dave Britz.

We all enjoyed the positive atmosphere that gave us a reason to celebrate.  And we are hopeful that Mike Schilling will join us at a future class luncheon.

Best wishes to all.

Joe Schufman

May 2022 Luncheon

Hello all,

What a climate. Last month April 14th we had the class lunch and it was a snow storm; today sunny and 90 degrees.   I’ll vote for the 90’s!

14  classmates got together today to socialize and enjoy each other’s company.

When looking at the photo in the u shaped table setting from the left—–Gary Stoffel, Ed Sund, Tom Troskey, Dave Britz, Joe M McGrath, Dave Tyree, Don Danneker, Gene Bovy, John Lentsch, Joe Schufman, Joe Brooks, Larry Moser, Tom Schleck, and John Runyon.

I heard from Greg Halbert this week and he wondered if we could have an outdoor lunch this summer. As many of you recall, for the past 6 years our classmate George Bonfe hosted a class lunch each August at his home on Forest Lake. I asked the group to think about how we could do this this summer. Any ideas let me know—THANKS.

Dave Britz has got the golf outing ( The Charlie) scheduled for Wednesday August 10th at Highland National with tee times beginning at 11:00 AM. After golf a trip to the NOOK for something to eat and drink.

Dave also spoke with the St Thomas Academy class of 63 who also meet at the Pool and Yacht Club the same day we meet to see if they have an interest in doing a combined golf outing with us. Dave will keep us informed as to how that develops.

Over the past couple of months the topic of our 60th anniversary of graduating from Cretin was brought up with the idea being what should we do. Along those lines John Runyon has been thinking and formulating some ideas about what we could do to honor the veterans in our class with a financial tie in to CDH which would be directed by us on how CDH would  use our gift. John will be working on how this might work and sharing his thoughts with us; and if anyone has ideas about this please contact John at   jrunyonnov@gmail.com

So that’s it for today and hope you guys are well and don’t forget to check the class web site    https://cretinclassof1963.org    If you have something you would like to post on the class web site let me of Joe Schufman know.

Thanks

Tom Troskey

Late Spring at the Minnesota Canadian Border

You Minnesota city dwellers thought our spring was late. Here is a note that Jim Dimond sent Tom Troskey yesterday.

Tom: Can’t make it this month. Going to be down in Iowa watching one of my daughters get awarded her Ph.D. Proud dad!

On your comment about the snow at last lunch, attached are photos from last week up at the border. They are still looking for Spring. The waterfalls were incredible!

Texas Reunion

Hey guys,

Some fun stuff just arrived from Texas——three of our classmates live just a few miles apart in Granbury Texas.

Terry Bacigalupo, Steve Bender and Tom Schwartz with their wives all got together for lunch today and sent the photo below along with the notes.

Thank you to Terry for sending so all the class of ’63 can take a look.

Also if any of you reading this get together with other class of ’63 grads, take a photo and send it my way so it can be shared.

Best to all,

Tom Troskey

Tom,

Three of us along with our wives got together for lunch & socializing today here in Granbury, TX. It is truly improbable & amazing that we would all retire and move to within just a few miles of one another. For anyone travelling to the DFW area, please come by to see us on Lake Granbury which is only 40 miles SW of Fort Worth.

Terry

April 2022 Luncheon

Hello All,

First off, those of you who are snow birds—-don’t hurry home. As a dozen of your classmates had lunch today we looked out the windows of  the P & Y  and wondered when will it end. Snowing like the dickens and 32 degrees.

The guys attending today were JOE BROOKS, DON DANNEKER, JOE SCHUFMAN, DAVE BRITZ, TOM TROSKEY, JOHN LENTSCH, ED SUND, DAVE TYREE, JIM DIMOND, DICK BUTLER, GENE BOVY AND TED MOUDRY.

A few items were discussed;

CDH enrollment is currently 940 students down from 1025 in 2019

The CDH athletic director is leaving to join the Minnesota State High School League

CDH has established a group known as BEAN  —- Black Excellence Alumni Network

Dave Britz has announce the annual Class of 63 golf outing (The Charlie) will be held on Wednesday August 10th at Highland National in St Paul—Mark your calendar —further info will follow soon.

Most importantly today our discussion centered on the loss of our friend Charlie Evans last Friday. All had some wonderful comments and memories about Charlie and how much he ment to them individually and to the class of 63 in general.

We will miss Charlie greatly and remember him forever. Charlie’s life will be celebrated at the Pool and Yacht Club on Sunday May 1st from 3-7PM.

We usually have a few photos of the class lunch but today there is ONE photo.  CHARLIE at our March class of 63 lunch.

May Charlie rest in peace.
